What is SAP BTP?
SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) is a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) developed by SAP SE. The platform offers a suite of services designed to integrate, extend, automate, and build intelligent business applications and processes. The platform capabilities include database and data management, AI, analytics, application development, automation, and integration, all delivered on a single, unified cloud platform.
SAP BTP connects SAP and non-SAP systems into an ecosystem. Its low-code/no-code tools enable admins to build cloud-native applications and transform data into actionable insights through analytics, AI, and machine learning. It allows organizations to add custom features to standard SAP software, such as S/4HANA, without modifying the original code, and to extend functionality side by side.
The primary purpose of SAP BTP is to help organizations achieve business agility, measurable business value, and continuous innovation by seamlessly connecting SAP and third-party applications.
- Agility: Rapid development of new applications and keeping the core code base clean, with flexible application scaling options that support multiple cloud infrastructures such as AWS, Azure, GCP, and SAP Data centers.
- Business Value: Reduced total cost of management through unified platform management, with Low-Code/No-code tools that even non-developers can use to build simple automated workflows and processes that save time and money.
- Continuous Innovation: Regular platform updates with access to new AI/ML capabilities that enable organizations to develop cloud native applications and utilize emerging technologies for faster innovation and deployment.
- Connectivity: SAP BTP not only works with the SAP ecosystem. The SAP Integration Suite offers over 3,400 prebuilt integrations (iFlows) and over 170 third-party connectors (Open Connectors). API management enables custom integrations, and event-driven architecture enables real-time data synchronization across cloud and on-premises environments.
SAP’s vision of an Intelligent Enterprise enables organizations to use data-driven insights and automation to run smarter, faster, and more resilient operations.
- Data Management: SAP BTP pulls data from across the company’s resources, SAP or Non-SAP, and centralizes it in one place. Enables real-time synchronization and access to business-ready data by reducing duplication and complexity.
- Analytics: SAP BTP transforms raw data into actionable insights with comprehensive reports and dashboards that enable business users and analysts to take data-driven decisions.
- AI integration: SAP Business AI is embedded directly into BTP, allowing companies to use pre-trained models for forecasting, recommendations, document processing, and anomaly detection.
Core Platform Capabilities of SAP BTP
Integration and Connectivity
- SAP Integration Suite (iPaaS): It enables organizations to connect cloud and on-premises systems with application-to-application integration using APIs, event-driven communication, and pre-built adapters. It supports real-time and asynchronous integration between SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba, Concur, and third-party platforms.
- Streamline onboarding and cost reduction: By establishing a centralized hub with reusable integration patterns, IT teams can significantly reduce operational complexity and custom deployment efforts. Onboarding new applications becomes faster while maintaining security and compliance, ensuring scalability, and reducing operational costs.
- Pre-built integration features: SAP provides a massive library of integration packages, which reduces the effort of coding connections between different department applications from scratch to just activating pre-built connection templates that follow industry best practices. For example, automated invoice processing and financial postings connected to supply chains demand planning, logistics, and inventory. HR functions such as Payroll synchronization, talent management, and time tracking are interconnected and linked to relevant departments.
Application Development and Extensibility
- Clean Core Compliance: By building application extensions on SAP BTP, such as custom business logic, UI enhancements, and process automation, the main SAP ERP code remains in standard form. This is beneficial during system upgrades, as organizations don’t have to spend months fixing broken customizations because the application extensions remain safe outside the main ERP. While BTP keeps the core clean, developers must ensure their BTP apps use SAP-provided Public APIs and Extension Points to remain truly upgrade-stable.
- Faster development: SAP Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP), SAP Build, and SAP Fiori accelerate development with predefined service templates, UI Elements, authentication, workflow, and notification mechanisms, standardized security, and UX design principles. Developers need only write the specific business logic; the rest can be handled by guided development tools and best-practice templates, reducing technical debt.
- Low-code and Content Management: SAP Build allows non-technical staff to create apps and automate workflows and forms via a visual interface with minimal coding efforts. Enterprise content management ensures secure handling of documents, records, and digital assets with direct integration into workflows.
Data and Analytics
- SAP Datasphere: It provides a unified data model across SAP applications and seamlessly connects operational and analytical data across SAP and non-SAP applications. This unified data layer eliminates data silos, provides real-time data quality and synchronization, and supports master data governance capabilities. Data can be viewed from multiple sources without moving or duplicating it, helping maintain compliance with data retention and privacy regulations.
- Data-driven insights for planning and analysis: Using SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), the organization can perform advanced analytics with thehelp of AI and visualize these analytics in real-time dashboards. These capabilities not only improve forecasting and financial planning but also optimize operational performance and support data-driven decision-making. Sales, Finance, and supply chain teams all plan their requirements using the same single source of truth, enabling real-time adjustments to forecasts.
- Identity and Consent Management: SAP Cloud Identity Services (IAS/IPS) provide a unified, cloud-based solution for securing and managing user identities across SAP and third-party applications. The Identity Authentication Service (IAS) manages secure single sign-on (SSO) and MFA logins, while the Identity Provisioning Service (IPS) automates user lifecycle synchronization across systems. Together, they serve as the central hub for identity management in SAP BTP.
Innovation via AI and Automation
AI-Assistance and Agents
- AI Grounded in Business: Unlike general LLMs, SAP AI uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) through services like SAP Document grounding that make sure when you ask a question like why the shipment is late, AI doesn’t guess or hallucinate, it pulls real-time data from the S/4HANA system and combines it with the carrier API to track the shipment status. AI leverages contextual understanding of the SAP environment to generate relevant suggestions, insights, and recommendations aligned with the organization’s structure, policies, and operational realities.
- Extensibility for Joule: This is a low-code environment within SAP Build that allows developers to create Joule Agents, which are autonomous helpers that handle complex, multi-step business processes. For example, instead of manually checking a supplier delay, a Joule agent can independently check inventory, find an alternative supplier, and draft a purchase order for approval. Built-in governance and security controls ensure that agents operate within defined business rules and compliance boundaries.
- SAP Build Code: An advanced coding environment designed to improve developer productivity through AI-assisted code generation, data model creation, and unit test generation. AI assistance accelerates development by leveraging a deep understanding of SAP data models and APIs and by learning from the organization’s codebase to provide relevant recommendations.
End-to-End Automation:
- Tasks and workflow automation: SAP Build’s low-code/no-code platform empowers non-technical users to automate workflows, business processes, and applications without extensive programming. Before automating a process, one must understand what’s broken and whether it is feasible to automate it. SAP Signavio provides powerful process mining capabilities to analyze actual process execution data to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and automation opportunities. Robotic process automation (RPA) executes repetitive, rule-based tasks across systems via UI interactions, making it useful for legacy system integration.
- Context-aware AI Agents: Agents with an understanding of specific business rules, compliance requirements, and operational constraints can automate complex tasks and workflows. With built-in security controls, every AI agent automation is governed by identity verification, authorization, logging, and security policy enforcement, ensuring compliance and traceability with efficiency and speed.
